Today is the 47th Year of My Call to Serve the LORD

And thank God for His Manifold Revelations

Just few days back I got another Glimpse of HIS POWER

The First Stanza of LIFE’s Desire came to mind

“I need the promised Holy Ghost

To stir the gift, O LORD of hosts”

1.) I need the promised Holy Ghost;
To stir the gift, O LORD of hosts.
Create in me concrete desire;
To be for Thee a flame of fire.

2.) I need the presence of His Son;
From world and sin and self to turn.
To live by faith through God’s great grace;
And walk with Him in grateful praise.

3.) I need my Father’s guiding grace;
To spur me on the upward way.
Show me the path to man’s chief end;
Stay by my side, dear Heavenly Friend.

4.) Though weak and weary I fight on;
Till some from this wide world I’ve won.
Averting men from God’s great wrath

The phrase LORD of hosts mean

LORD of ARMIES!

Indeed!

Our LORD is THE LORD OF ARMIES

In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus said, King James Version
Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? (Matthew 26:53)

One legion numbers 6,000 in the Roman Army. 6 Legions mean 72,000 Angels

Jesus did not says only 12 legion, he said MORE THAN 12 legions of Angels. In fact at His Command ALL THE ENTIRE ARMY OF ANGELS WILL ACT AS ONE INSTANTLY!

SUCH IS THE POWER OF OUR LORD GOD THE CREATOR

Now though I wrote these words

“I need the promised Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit)

To stir the gift, O LORD of hosts”

in year 1977 on Mt Faber (Spore)

I only came to experience its Power as Life progresses

On reading again how Elisha asked for a double portion of the Holy Spirit

He had to pursue & pursue

3 Times Elijah told him to tarry or to wait.

3 Times Elisha insisted he must FOLLOW Elijah

2 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

² And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.

³ And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

GILGAL, BETHEL & JERICHO. ELISHA WAS TOLD NOT TO FOLLOW BUT TO STAY & WAIT. NO. ELISHA OVERCAME & PURSUED 3 OBJECTIONS: HE WANTED TO FOLLOW ELIJAH CLOSELY

HOW DIFFERENT IT WAS WHEN ELIJAH FIRST CALLED ELISHA TO THE MINISTRY.

INSTEAD OF RISING UP IMMEDIATELY TO FOLLOW ELIJAH ELISHA WENT BACK TO SETTLE HIS AFFAIR; BURNT HIS BRIDGES & BADE FAREWELL TO FAMILY & FRIENDS

BUT HE REDEEMED HIMSELF BY BREAKING THROUGH ALL RESISTANCE IN THE PURSUIT OF GOD’S WILL & POWER.

THIS SAME HAPPENED TO PETER AFTER HE DENIED CHRIST 3 TIMES & JESUS DREW OUT HIS LOYALTY BY ASKING PETER 3 TIMES, “SIMON LOVEST THOU ME”

⁵ And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

⁶ And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.

⁷ And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.

Before Elijah left for heaven he asked Elisha to make one final request

Elisha said

“I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”

How was the prayer answered

Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

And it was fulfilled (Ask and you shall be given.)

And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

¹² And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

What did Elisha see?

Answer: BEHOLD, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

Ha! It was a chariot of fire, and horses of fire

Elijah had a chariot of fire but Elisha got MANY CHARIOTS OF FIRE

In fact a whole mountain filled with Chariots of Fire

WITH THE LORD OF ARMIES & ARMIES OF THE LIVING GOD

ELISHA  DID DOUBLE THE MIRACLES THAT ELIJAH DID

ELIJAH HAD 8 MAJOR MIRACLES WHILE ELISHA HAS 16

ELIJAH CAUSE THE LITTLE FLOUR & OIL IN THE WIDOW & HER ONLY SON’S HOME TO BE REPLENISHED DAY BY DAY UNTIL RAIN ARRIVED

ELISHA DID FOR ANOTHER WIDOW AND HER TWO SONS BY MULTIPLY OIL INSTANTLY MORE THAN ENOUGH TO PAY THEIR CREDITORS & HAVING MORE THAN ENOUGH TO LIVE OUT THE REST OF THEIR LIVES ON EARTH

THIS IS THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE POWER OF A MAN WITH DOUBLE PORTION IN COMPARISON TO A MAN FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

TO SERVE GOD WE NEED HIS HOLY SPIRIT WITH THE ATTENDANT HEAVENLY SOLDIERS

HOW?

BY TOTAL & COMPLETE SURRENDER OF OUR LIVES, OUR POSSESSIONS & MONIES

EVERYTHING MUST BE LAID ON THE ALTAR OF  DEDICATION & SACRIFICE WHICH IS THE HARDEST THING TO DO

BUT ALL WILL BE MADE WILLING IN THE TIME OF HIS VISITATION

MAY  WE PRAY

“I NEED THE PROMISED HOLY SPIRIT

What was the content?

It says

In the previous post we mentioned Dr. Jacob Chelli praying 2.33 hours a day & how he read through the Bible few hundred times. This is an example how the Fire of God can burn brightly through our lives – using the means of grace in prayer & the Word of God

Prince of Preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon not only read the Bible. He has a Huge library of Commentaries on the Bible & lots of Puritanical Books.

His collection of Books filled his Study from wall to wall & he had to employ a personal librarian to keep track

Among his thousands of books one stood out “THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS” by John Bunyan

Spurgeon read THE PILGRIM PROGRESS more than 100 times.

Yes, Spurgeon read PILGRIM PROGRESS more than a hundred times!

He said “it pricked him” everywhere.

True indeed. The PILGRIM PROGRESS is next to the Bible

Let’s look at one example

THE FIRE BEHIND THE WALL

Then I saw in my dream that the Interpreter took Christian by the hand and led him to where there was a fire burning brightly by a wall. Now Christian was about to enjoy its warmth when he was gruffly pushed aside by an angry man with two pails of water.

“Out of my way, fool!”

The man set the bucket down and then tossed the contents of  the other and shouting angrily, “Out, cursed flame! (Tshhh) Out i say! (Pssss) And out again!  Take that! (Tshhh)

Next he took up the other bucket and tried to douse the flames. But no matter how much water he cast on the fire, he could do no more than make it choke and sputter for a moment. Then the flames would rise again, higher and hotter than before.

“Oh what’s wrong with this miserable worthless water!” grumbled the man. “Out foul flames (Tshhh)  Out! Ahh. Out cursed light (Pssss) Out! Out! Out! Hah! (Tssss)

“What means this?” queried the puzzled pilgrim.

“The work you see is the work of grace burning in the heart of one who loves God. He who seeks to douse it is the devil.”

“But is spite of his best efforts to put it out, the fire burns higher and hotter.”

“Ah yes, Heh, heh, heh,” chuckled the Interpreter. “And the reason for that thou shalt soon see. Whilst he goes off to refill his buckets, come, around  the wall behind with me”

So he took him behind the wall where he saw a noble-looking gentleman standing with a vessel in his hand.

Christian soon perceived He was often pouring oil into the golden tube that passed through the wall and supplied the fire with fuel.

Then Christian asked, “And what does this mean?”

“This is Christ, whispered the Interpreter reverently.”

“He, by continually applying the oil of His grace, sustains the flame of love in our hearts!”

“Ah.”

“Because of Christ’s constant help, it matters not what trials the devil may pour in upon us. “The oil of the Spirit floats above them all and the flame of love burns brighter still.”

“Aha,” said Christian thankfully. “A good lesson for me!”

“And did you notice how our Lord stood behind the wall to maintain the fire?”

“Aye, I wondered about that, why so?”

“To teach thee, dear Pilgrim, that even when you cannot see Him, Christ is always near. No matter what doubts may come or fears assail, your faith may burn brightly still.

The great success of the 1978 Evangelist Campaign was due to 2 things: we will give ourselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

⁴ But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

Very true indeed!

After more than 42 years now since year 1978 the MINISTRY OF PRAYER is ever more vital than that memorable week of Soul winning Campaign culminating with SOM (School of Mission) 1st Graduation Service

On that 1978 December night in Singapore Life Bible Presbyterian Church in Singapore Dr. Jacob Chelli was the Guest Preacher

is Rev Dr Wally Tow Siang Hwa who Founded Calvary Pandan Bible Presbyterian Church in Pandan Gardens (S’pore). Dr. Tow was also instrumental in formation of Calvary Jurong Bp Church in Tao Ching Road as well as many other Bp Churches and among them Calvary Jaya Bp Fellowship (Malaysia) a decade later.

Now the memory of these Men of Prayer and their labours remind us of Acts 6:4

WE WILL GIVE OURSELVES CONTINUALLY TO PRAYER

That night Dr. Jacob Chelli preached and mentioned the Cult Jim Jones of Jones Town in which more than 900 people died in a mass- murder suicide.

It compelled us to go out to preach the truth as errors abound

Dr. Jacob Chelli was invited to be our Bible Conference Speaker in Penang Hill, Malaysia

Here he revealed to us how he prayed

As a Baptist he believed in giving 10% of our tithe to God. But he mentioned something new to all of us

He said just as we tithe our money we should also tithe our time

We should give one tenth of our time to God in prayer everyday

One day has 24 hours. So 1/10 is 2 hours 20 minutes

Wow!

That is a high calling and challenge!

At that time of course we shrugged it off as we prayed 3 times each day

1 hour of prayer in the morning

1 hour of prayer after lunch (the most sleepy hour)

1 hour of prayer at night (It was 2 hours at night until I told Dr Peter Ng to make in one hour or else there is not enough time to do our Studies in SOM)

And those 4 year spent (75 to 78) were very blessed times of prayer (not including extra times of own personal prayer & fasting times, Wednesday Evening Prayer & Friday All Night Prayer at Mt Faber

Now Dr Jacob Chelli prayed on his own and on his knees!

His time spent in prayer caused him to have calloused knees like camels knees.

We read about it before

In his Church History (c. 325), Eusibius writes:

But Hegesippus, who lived immediately after the apostles, gives the most accurate account in the fifth book of his Memoirs. He writes as follows:

… [James](brother of Jesus)  alone was permitted to enter into the holy place; for he wore not woolen but linen garments. And he was in the habit of entering alone into the temple, and was frequently found upon his knees begging forgiveness for the people, so that his knees became hard like those of a camel, in consequence of his constantly bending them in his worship of God, and asking forgiveness for the people.

So here is a Man of Prayer

Dr. Jacob Chelli once mentioned that he will never leave his house if there is no peace in his heart. He will even wait upon God for peace even if he is late in boarding a plane. He said, “The plane will not fly without Jacob Chelli on it” True indeed, God delayed the plane for His servant

Because he gave time to God – God gave time to work for him

Now it has been great joy to hear that Dr. Chelli help founded over 2,000 Baptist Churches in the dark continent of India. He read the Bible more than 420 times in his Life Time (This is 10 times more than Dr John Sung who read thru the Bible 40 times) Such is a Giant in Prayer and in the Word

Last year at the wake of Dr Tow Siang Hwa we heard one of his daughter mentioning how they spent hours & hours praying for so many people. Praying for people they don’t even know

For Dr Peter Ng the times spent in Prayer on Friday Night last 6 hours from 10pm Friday Night to 4 am Saturday morning

The Clarion Call to Prayer is as Vital Today as 42 years ago

“No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.”

BUT WE WILL GIVE OURSELVES CONTINUALLY TO PRAYER AND TO THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD (Acts 6:4)

Below is a graduation service of Berean Baptist Bible College & Seminary

Sometime in the 1980s  we conducted a Soul Winning Campaign  in KL JSM

Unlike Singapore BHS JSM (Sept 1978 Successful Campaign) & Penang JSM 1979 & 1980 (Prayer support)

the KL JSM Soul Winning Campaign was a disappointment. Not even one person got saved

Not only that, I offended my brother Tong Yee Cham when i was too strict with him when he did not cut his hair to the shorter length I wanted. I did not allow him to chair for one Soul winning Meeting night. I took over the chairing & also gave the message at the same time.  I was totally wrong & dictatorial. And it was my fault that the Holy Spirit was grieved & the Meetings were not blessed

During one Friday Night Prayer Meeting on Gasing Ridge I pondered over the State of the Church & started to weep & weep.

Not only no soul got saved I also stumbled my brother by my unkind attitude

I was totally miserable before God

I could only pray and ask God to have mercy on His people

Then one day the Church phone rang

On the line was Ms Yee Choi Lin, a contact of one Church member.

I witnessed to her on the phone. And I felt the LORD’s working. When I gave out te invitation and asked her to pray the sinner’s prayer over the phone she readily accepted. The good LORD opened her heart to the gospel.

So Sis Yee Choi Lin was one of our earliest Converts in KL JSM

But it didn’t end there. She also brought her Sis Rebekah Yee to Church. And she too, got saved.

Then she brought her younger sis Yee Choi Wah to Church. And she accepted Christ. Sister Choi continued to bring more of her friends to Church & the Congregation increased

How we thank God for His Unfailing Promise in Psalm 126:6

THOSE WERE GLORIOUS DAYS AND NIGHTS OF PRAYER

MAY ALL GLORY BE TO OUR MOST GLORIOUS LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

The 1990s were times of prayer. The Spirit of Prayer was with us.

After Calvary Jaya Bp Fellowship was established we attended its services in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

The young Church grew in membership.

One evening we attended A Gospel Film Show.

It was one that was Spirit inspired and gave great conviction

I was very blessed. Just before the film ended Rev. Lim Jit Thye (Chinese Pastor) asked me to give a brief gospel message after the Film Show. I requested the brethren to pray while i gave an impromptu message

Ha! No time was given except for a brief 15 minutes to prepare and sum up my thoughts as to what i should speak.

Then i remembered the times spent in daily prayer

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Yes, dear LORD, this is your servant time of need! Having been to The Throne of Grace and boldly praying (not knowing what to ask before) now we know; and we urgently needed “Timely help” at this most crucial time like now.

When i opened my mouth I immediately felt assisted with an unction of power. And the simple invitation went forth in power

At the invitation 3 people raised their hands to receive Christ as LORD and Savior (Now this has been the practise in JSM & also among the Baptist Churches, but not in Calvary Bp Churches. Bp Churches normally don’t ask for raising of hands publicly in response to preaching)

But that night of nights in PJ 3 persons raised their hands at the Gospel invitation

Among them were a brother called Danny (teacher) and one we could not recall the name now. And one sister called Danielle Ding Lai Yat raised up her hand to accept Christ. To our gladness Danielle later became the wife of Rev. Lee Kim Shong (the current Pastor of Calvary Jaya Bp Fellowship

So on hindsight our time spent at the Throne of Grace prepares us with God’s timely help in times of need

As the song goes

“Thou art coming to a Throne

  Large petitions with thee bring

For His grace and power are such;

  That none can ever ask too much

Below is the Calvary Jaya Bp Fellowship (PJ)

Time has flown. A year has passed since the passing of Dr Tow Siang Hwa.

Though absent in body. His memory remains. It was in year 1978 when I first heard him spoke in BHS Jesus Saves Mission as a guest speaker.

The message was against the compromising Billy Graham Crusade in Singapore then. Both JSM & Dr. Tow held the fundamentalist view of separation from compromise. His message was filled with pepper and chilli as he called it then.

10 years later in 1988 when we resigned from JSM we attended the Calvary Jaya Bp Fellowship in Damansara Jaya founded by Dr Tow

How we thank God for raising up this Fundamental Stand in these last days

In year 1989 Calvary Pandan from Singapore paid for the current Calvary Jaya BP Fellowship Church building at 1, Jalan 17/1, Section 17, PJ for Rm590,000 as an outright purchase after the Bank failed to auction it. The piece of land next door was purchased at the same time for Rm190,000 on the same day.

But to get a Church permit is difficult and Elder Choe Tong Seng told the Deacons to scout for a suitable Shophouse nearby to hold Church Service legally.

Meanwhile we asked members to pray 24 hour Chain Prayer

Each person who volunteered will take up one or more hours to pray. The hours of daylight were easily filled. Then some took the 12 midnight to 1am slot. And some took up the 1am to 2am watch hour. The wee hours from 2am to 4am were quite empty. Tough then as most members  were professionals who need to rise early for work everyday. And so the Church prayed

Thanks be to God. Finally the Church is registered under the Society Acts and instead of Calvary Jaya BP Church it is called Calvary Jaya BP Fellowship (Society) today. Swiftly 31 years have passed.

It was Dr Tow who told us to take a Multivitamin each day with a glass of water every morning before breakfast. I have been doing this for over 30 years now.

Another piece of great advise was from Dr. Choe (A pharmacist by training) who told me to take High dosage of Vitamin C for flu

AND IN ANSWER TO KING HEZEKIAH’S PRAYER THE SUN DIAL MOVED BACKWARD (SO THE DAY CAN MOVE BACK WITH THE POWER GOD BY PRAYER

YES! PRAYER TO GOD CAN MOVE SUMMER WEATHER FORWARD

MAY THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY GIVE US THE URGENCY TO PRAY FOR SUCH A TIME LIKE THIS

¹³ If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

¹⁴ If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

¹⁵ Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.

PESTILENCE OF CORONAVIRUS

The year was 1977. We had the most powerful revival on Penang Hill of which more than 30 young men & women responded to the Call to serve God

Among those who attended the Camp of about 150 people or more was Brother Amos Depasquale

Here is a man of great compassion and prayer.

He together with a number of us started confessing our sins publicly. And God poured out His Spirit. It was then a time of fervent confessions & reconciliations. Oh how blessed!

Next year Brother Amos visited us in Singapore & he fasted and prayed for 7 days on liquid only (no solid food)

We got him some packets of milk.

And one particular day I went up with Brother Amos to Mt Faber

Here beholding the pure pristine  view from Mt Faber he asked me to sing

The Year of Prayer 1993 was a Very Blessed Year

King James Bible (Leviticus 6:13)
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out

1993 was a year spent in prayer every morning for that whole year.

And it was a very blessed year indeed!

As Matthew Henry said, “A life spent in communion with God, is the pleasantest life in the world”

In the morning I would rise early and spent an hour in prayer

First of all I would pray for my immediate family – my wife and my 3 sons. Then I would pray for my immediate relatives by names. And then relatives from my wife’s side by names

These are the circles

1. My immediate family
2.  My immediate relatives
3.  Relatives on my wife’s side
4.  The Government of Malaysia for that year
5.  The Church I attended that year & all its leaders & members
6.  Friends & Converts from Near and Far
7.  Servants of God and their ministries near and far

1993 was also the year which Malaysia’s stock market went into the most powerful bull run in its history. But i was not in the Stock market.

Because I did not participate in its frenzied rise into the stratosphere God also protected me from its subsequent collapse which caused many bankruptcies

Now in one hour I have covered all my relatives & friends in prayer.

As prayer time enters into the months I felt drawn more and more to pray. But having run out of immediate prayer items at hand I turned to the Daily Newspapers & look up world events that I should pray for

And pray I did for another 30 minutes to one hour as the Spirit led

How blessed the time went by and soon 1993 was over.

Last year was another year spent in prayer. Very blessed.

So this year 2020 again may Almighty God give us The Spirit of Prayer

It has been very blessed so far
